Remote Data Backup - Users Guide

Restoring Files / Testing Your Backup

The reason for having a backup is very much like having insurance. You might need to restore your files or folders. Maybe your disk crashed, your PC was stolen, one of your important data files somehow got corrupted or you made some extensive changes to that important presentation and you need all of your changes backed out.

1. Dates -- First decide when the file(s) were last good. Was it the 1st of the month, 15th of the month or one of the weekly/daily backups? What folder will it be retrieved from?

2. Names -- You will need to know the exact full name of the file(s) and the full path name where it resides. You will need to know if it was compressed (zipped) or not.

3. Rename the file - Rename the bad file using Windows Explorer -> right click on the file -> Rename it. Such as Mailing_list.doc should be renamed to old_Mailing_list.doc. This is just another precaution.

NEVER EVER OVERWRITE YOUR ORIGINAL FILES - ALWAYS RENAME THE FILE OR DIRECTORY FIRST.

4. Retrieve the directory and or file(s)  you need using WinSCP or any FTP software you normally use to transfer your files.
